Firewise Sun Valley: Our Community

There have been at least two local fires in the Sun Valley flats area in 2020—both alarming and dangerous. This is too close for comfort. To become more fire aware, we began exploring the resources FIRESafe MARIN offers.

This past October, the Sun Valley Neighborhood Association convened a discussion of concerned neighbors who have volunteered to incorporate as Firewise-recognized sites. This furthered the conversation to examine our defensible spaces and participate with the FIRESafe Marin group to get to know each other face to face so that we can help each other in the event of an emergency.

We began seeking national recognition for the Sun Valley flats to become a recognized Firewise site (which includes many benefits to local homeowners). We canvassed the neighborhood to develop a steering committee and potential block captains so that we can identify people with special needs who might require extra attention in the event of an evacuation.
