Adapt to wildfire = Resilience

Prepare. Harden Your Home. Ready Your Community.

When it comes to wildfire, we are all in this together.  Every one of us needs to do our part to reduce our risks and look out for one another in the case of an emergency.  Here in Marin, we are fortunate to live in a vibrant community of engaged residents who care about the environment and appreciate our natural surroundings.  This comes with a responsibility to be good stewards of our landscape and to look out for the well-being of the Sun Valley flats community.

Wherever you live, you need to adapt to the realities of your surroundings.  In Sun Valley, get ready for late Winter dryness (lightning/ prolonged fire season/ dry vegetation).  Living in Marin means adapting to wildfire–together.

The Firewise Program encourages local solutions for safety by involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for preparing their homes from the risk of wildfire. The program provides resources to help homeowners learn how to adapt to living with wildfire while encouraging and empowering neighbors to work together to take action now to reduce their wildfire risk and prevent losses. Our neighborhood can join the growing network of more than 1,500 recognized Firewise communities taking action and ownership in preparing and protecting their homes against the threat of wildfire.

Sign Up for Alerts and Warning Systems

In an emergency, Marin officials may use many different tools to communicate information and instructions to the community. Alert Marin, Nixle, local TV and radio, and social media are the primary outlets. Register now and prepare to use these systems before an emergency occurs.

Pay Attention to Red Flag Warnings

Fire agencies monitor weather conditions daily and use indexes and predictions to make decisions about how to fight fires and how to prevent new fires from igniting. Residents and visitors to areas where wildfires are likely to occur should be aware of current and predicted weather conditions, and should take additional actions to prepare their family, home, and community when risk is elevated.

Be Ready to Evacuate

Make sure that you and your family are prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Prepare an evacuation go-kit, create a family communication plan, and have your evacuation checklist ready.
